Capitalising on emerging trends in hiring and employment

3 February 2025

Background

Our client is a leader in employment, with a constant eye on emerging trends in hiring and employment.

In late 2022 and early 2023, Australia had dire need of talent, and there was a particular shortage in certain roles and sectors.

Our client wanted to understand the opportunity for cross-border remote hiring. This was with a view to help identify the strategic opportunity, as well as threat if they failed to capitalise.

Approach

An online survey was deployed to understand these trends in hiring and employment. This involved surveying 1000 people involved in hiring across the market, augmented by our client’s database.

The study sought to understand several key areas:

  • Current state of remote work / global remote hiring
  • Factors that drive adoption of global remote hiring
  • Benefits of global remote hiring
  • Drawbacks of global remote hiring
  • Journey and method of engaging in global remote hiring

Result

The study was incredibly valuable both strategically and tactically in guiding the opportunity around trends in hiring and employment. Specifically, we uncovered:

  • Quantification of organisational policy toward remote working policies, helping understand prevalence and permission to engage in this type of employment
  • The balance between remote work and global hiring, helping prioritise where the easiest ‘wins’ might be based on the size of each cohort
  • The types of roles most suited to global remote hiring, guiding an industry-specific strategy
  • Robust random forest regression was used to identify which firmographics are most closely tied to remote hiring (e.g. industry, business size, role, familiarity with remote hiring), helping develop a model of the most compelling signals to act upon in communications
  • A journey to global remote hiring and the perceived benefits / drawbacks, helping our client know what to hero, and where to support to overcome drawbacks, at each stage of the journey
  • The methods and channels used to engage in global remote hiring, helping understand the unique benefits and challenges of the competitive set and how to compete

Ultimately, the study helped our client inform a strategy to respond to emerging trends in hiring and employment. This provided a view on the current lie of the land, where the greatest opportunities and threats lay, and how the business could compete within this space.
